Biography

Volkner is Sinnoh’s final Gym Leader and a friend of Elite Four member Flint. His skill has left him frustrated by opponents who cannot challenge him.

Appearance

Volkner has spiky blond hair, a blue jacket and practical dark clothing.

Personality

Initially detached and bored, he regains enthusiasm when faced with a genuinely strong challenger.

Role in the story

Find him at Vista Lighthouse before the Gym battle. Earning the eighth badge opens the final field-move requirement for reaching the Pokémon League.

Gameplay and encounters

First Gym battle in Platinum: Jolteon Lv. 46; Raichu Lv. 46; Luxray Lv. 48; Electivire Lv. 50. Ground attacks are your main type advantage. Expect coverage moves rather than assuming a Ground Pokémon can ignore the entire team.

Rotate the coloured gears to connect walkways across the Gym’s rooms.

Badge and TM rewards

Win the Beacon Badge and TM57 Charge Beam. The badge allows Waterfall outside battle once you have the HM. These are the first Gym teams, not the later Battleground rematches.
