Elite Four and Cynthia preparation

Build coverage for the first League challenge without depending on one perfect team.

Spoiler notice: This guide discusses story progression or late-game content.

Edition covered

Original Nintendo DS release; not Brilliant Diamond or Shining Pearl.

01

Prepare a team with distinct jobs

Bring reliable damage from both physical and special attackers, status recovery, and enough healing to last consecutive fights. Check move accuracy and PP as well as power. An Ice attack is valuable late in the challenge, but the user must survive long enough to deliver it.

02

Aaron and Bertha

Aaron specialises in Bug types, but Drapion is Poison/Dark and changes the matchup. Bertha’s Ground team encourages Water and Grass coverage. Dual typing matters: avoid assuming one super-effective move against the first Pokémon will work against every member of the team.

03

Flint and Lucian

Use Water or Ground coverage against Flint while watching for coverage moves and status effects. Against Lucian, Dark attacks offer a useful starting point, but Bronzong’s secondary Steel typing complicates simple type matching. Heal between opponents rather than entering the next battle with a key counter nearly fainted.

04

Cynthia’s mixed team

Cynthia uses Spiritomb, Roserade, Togekiss, Lucario, Milotic and Garchomp. In Generation IV, Spiritomb has no type weakness: Fairy does not exist yet. Garchomp is especially vulnerable to Ice, but its speed and damage make a frail Ice user an unreliable plan. Milotic requires a different answer from the Ground/Dragon threat.

05

Turn a failed run into a specific adjustment

Identify which opponent exhausted your items or forced repeated revives. Change coverage, held items or the party order before grinding every member indiscriminately. Keep a save before entering the challenge so you can revise the team instead of being committed to the same losing setup.
