Biography

Byron is Canalave’s Steel-type specialist and Roark’s father. His interest in mining complements a team built around resilience.

Appearance

Byron carries a shovel and wears rugged work clothes and a cape-like outer garment.

Personality

Direct and proud of his defensive Pokémon, he enjoys testing a challenger’s strength.

Role in the story

He is the sixth Gym Leader. After the battle, the Canalave Library meeting advances the investigation into Sinnoh’s lakes.

Gameplay and encounters

First Gym battle in Platinum: Magneton Lv. 37; Steelix Lv. 38; Bastiodon Lv. 41. Ground and Fighting attacks can break through his defences. Bastiodon is doubly weak to both; Magneton is especially vulnerable to Ground.

Navigate the lifts between floors to reach the elevated platform where Byron waits.

Badge and TM rewards

Win the Mine Badge and TM91 Flash Cannon. The badge allows Strength outside battle once you have the HM. These are the first Gym teams, not the later Battleground rematches.
