Badges, partner upgrades and battle roles

Build a practical loadout and spend your Star Pieces and Shine Sprites deliberately.

Edition covered

Original GameCube release; the Switch remake has changes not covered here.

01

Choose a role for your BP

Badge Points determine what you can equip. A useful first-playthrough setup includes a dependable damage option and protection suited to the next area. Remove badges that solve a problem you are no longer facing; owning a powerful badge does nothing while it remains unequipped.

02

Match attacks to enemy position

Jump attacks, hammer attacks and partner moves have different target restrictions. Flying, spiked or armoured enemies can punish the wrong choice. Use Goombella’s Tattle to learn enemy information, then equip moves that address the actual encounter rather than repeatedly taking contact damage.

03

Spend Star Pieces and Shine Sprites separately

Star Pieces can be exchanged with Dazzle for badges. Shine Sprites are used with Merlon to improve partners. These collections serve different systems. Choose upgrades for partners you use often, while remembering that a situational partner may become valuable in a particular chapter.

04

Practise defence before relying on it

Normal guarding reduces damage; the stricter Superguard has a different timing window. Learn both against predictable enemies. If a difficult boss attempt depends on perfect Superguards you have not practised, add a more forgiving recovery or defensive option to your loadout.

05

Prepare for the Pit of 100 Trials

The Pit is an optional endurance challenge with a long commitment and increasingly dangerous fights. Carry recovery, include ways to hit different enemy positions and know when to leave. The original GameCube version and Switch remake differ in features, so use the original game’s rules when planning a run.
