Getting started & game modes
Movement, the reserve item and the DS multiplayer modes.
Original New Super Mario Bros. for Nintendo DS (2006). Later Wii, Nintendo 3DS and Wii U sequels are separate games.
A new rescue mission
Bowser Jr. takes Princess Peach, sending Mario across eight worlds. This side-scrolling adventure combines familiar jumping with wall jumps, triple jumps and ground pounds.
Movement and controls
Use the Control Pad to move. The Options menu offers two jump/dash button layouts. Hold the dash button for speed; jump against a wall and jump again while sliding to wall-jump. Press down in midair for a ground pound. Practise these moves in open areas before trying them over hazards.
The reserve item
The lower screen can hold a spare power-up. Tap the stored item to release it when you need it. Check your reserve before entering a castle or returning for a difficult Star Coin.
Mario vs. Luigi
Two nearby DS systems can compete in a separate versus mode to collect Big Stars. This is a competitive mode rather than cooperative play through the main story.
Touch-screen minigames
The minigame collection includes action, puzzle, table and variety games, with multiplayer options for up to four players. Some activities return from Super Mario 64 DS.
