Choose the right tool for guards, electronics, mines and ranged encounters.

Separate quiet movement from quiet weapons
A suppressor reduces gunshot noise, but does not make an exposed attack invisible. Study patrols before raising a weapon and leave yourself a route out. The original Metal Gear Solid does not provide MGS2’s tranquilizer pistol, so do not plan around a nonlethal dart weapon that is absent here.
Use chaff for electronic obstacles
Chaff temporarily interferes with electronics. Time your movement through the affected area instead of throwing it too early and waiting. It is a different tool from a stun grenade, which temporarily incapacitates enemies, and from a fragmentation grenade, which causes explosive damage.
Understand the missile controls
The Stinger is for locking onto a target, while the Nikita lets you steer a launched missile. Find cover before guiding a Nikita because your attention is on its flight. Electronic interference prevents normal guidance; if a route fails, inspect the obstacle instead of sending another missile along the same path.
Handle mines and explosives deliberately
Crawl to retrieve Claymores rather than walking into their trigger area. C4 is placed and detonated remotely; clear your escape route before triggering it. Grenades have a fuse, so learn the throw timing in a low-pressure situation before using them beside cover that can trap the blast.
Equip survival tools when needed
Rations can be used manually or automatically when equipped as life runs out. Thermal goggles reveal heat signatures; a key card must be equipped to open compatible card doors. A cardboard box is situational cover, not an unconditional disguise. Check the item description before assuming a tool works everywhere.
