Equipment, relics and map exploration
Make better equipment decisions and keep track of ability-gated rooms.
Original PlayStation Alucard campaign; later ports and Saturn additions can differ.
Compare reach as well as attack
A weapon with a larger attack number can still be awkward against a fast or low target. Test swing speed, reach and whether you can safely attack while moving. Keep an alternative weapon for enemies your usual attack struggles to hit, and change armour when an area’s damage becomes difficult to manage.
Separate hearts from healing
Hearts fuel subweapons; they do not restore health. Use consumables or a save room for recovery. Breaking candles can replace your current subweapon, so look at the pickup before collecting it if you are carrying a tool you want to keep.
Use the correct inventory category
Relics provide exploration abilities and can be toggled, while equipment changes your hands, armour and accessories. A newly collected relic is not a weapon to equip in a hand slot. If a transformation will not activate, check the relic, available magic and your current circumstances.
Practise magic away from danger
Spells use directional commands and MP. Practise the input in a safe corridor and watch whether the spell actually triggers before relying on it against a boss. Build your tactics around commands you can perform consistently; simply owning a spell description does not remove the need to execute its input.
Keep a map checklist
Record high ledges, grates, water routes and unusual clock-room passages separately. Explore the edges of large rooms to fill their map squares, and remember that the normal and inverted castles both contribute to completion. The full original map can exceed 200%; do not use 100% as the finish line for both castles together.
Check the edition note above before following a route. Suggested preparation and tactics are editorial recommendations; alternative teams and routes can also work.
