SUPER METROID / COMBAT & EXPLORATION

Boss preparation and exploration tools

Use ammunition, movement upgrades and map notes to reduce difficult return trips.

Edition covered

Original SNES game; randomizers and ROM hacks are outside this guide.

01

Prepare reserves before committing

Energy Tanks increase your safety margin, while missile and Super Missile expansions give you more chances to exploit a short opening. Visit a refill or save room before an unfamiliar boss. Reserve Tanks are a separate backup resource; check their mode and remaining energy rather than treating an empty tank as protection.

02

Read each boss’s vulnerable opening

Kraid’s mouth, Phantoon’s eye and Draygon’s belly are the important targets. Fire when the target is exposed rather than emptying ammunition into invulnerable armour. Learn one safe movement pattern first, then add attacks; damage avoided usually buys more opportunities than a desperate volley.

03

Treat Phantoon’s Super Missiles carefully

Super Missiles inflict strong damage but provoke a longer retaliation pattern. A cautious first clear can use ordinary missiles and focus on avoiding the flames. Destroying suitable projectiles can provide drops, so an uncomfortable fight does not always require an immediate reset.

04

Distinguish speed, height and access puzzles

Speed Booster blocks need a running approach; grapple points need the Grapple Beam; narrow tunnels need Morphing Ball access. Use bombs or the X-Ray Scope to inspect suspicious terrain. Space Jump timing takes practice, so try repeated jumps in an open room before attempting a hazardous crossing.

05

Plan collection passes by region

Write down blocked rooms and revisit several in the same area together. A visible item can have an entrance from a neighbouring room rather than the obvious wall. Explore with a full energy supply and keep your return path in mind; collecting an expansion is less useful if the route back repeatedly ends the run.

FIELD NOTE

Check the edition note above before following a route. Suggested preparation and tactics are editorial recommendations; alternative teams and routes can also work.
