POKÉMON EMERALD / GETTING STARTED

Hoenn starters and battle basics

A starter guide to Pokémon Emerald: choose a hoenn partner, use generation iii damage rules, keep useful field moves available, return for the battle frontier.

Edition covered

Original Game Boy Advance release; not Omega Ruby or Alpha Sapphire.

01

Choose a Hoenn partner

Treecko, Torchic and Mudkip are the starter choices. Build a varied party around your choice, and keep room for Pokémon that can help you travel across Hoenn’s water routes.

02

Use Generation III damage rules

Physical and special damage depend on the move’s type in Emerald. For example, Water attacks are special and Fighting attacks are physical. Do not apply Platinum’s move-by-move category rules here.

03

Keep useful field moves available

HMs help you cross obstacles as you progress. Plan which party members will carry them so your main attackers retain useful battle coverage.

04

Return for the Battle Frontier

Emerald’s Battle Frontier is a postgame destination with facilities that change the battle format. Learn one facility’s rules before preparing a specialised team for it.
