Official online service and local play
The original official Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection service closed on May 20, 2014. Local wireless play between compatible DS systems remains available. Unofficial replacement servers exist, but their setup and compatibility are separate from the original service.
Multiplayer benefits
Multiplayer helps with foreign fruit, catalog access, trading, Katie and Kaitlin, and the DS version's Nookington's requirement.
Wii U restrictions
The Wii U version has no local or online multiplayer, removes the visiting- shopper upgrade requirement, and has restrictions on multiplayer-dependent and historical distribution content.
