Gameplay & game modes
Grand Prix, Time Trials, missions and battles on Nintendo DS.
Original Nintendo DS release. Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection ended on May 20, 2014; local wireless play is separate.
About the game
Nintendo developed and published Mario Kart DS in 2005. The upper screen follows your kart while the lower screen displays a course map and race information.
Grand Prix
Race against seven computer opponents. Eight cups contain 32 tracks: 16 new Nitro courses and 16 returning Retro courses. Choose 50cc, 100cc or 150cc, with a mirrored 150cc class available to unlock.
Other modes
Time Trials focus on your fastest finish. Mission Mode sets individual challenges and boss encounters. Balloon Battle revolves around opponents’ balloons; Shine Runners is a contest to collect Shine Sprites.
Multiplayer today
Local wireless supports nearby players, including a limited single-card Download Play option. The original Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection service closed on May 20, 2014.
Mission Mode progression
Each level contains eight challenges followed by a boss task. Challenges include collecting coins, passing gates and attacking enemies. Ratings range from E through A and one to three stars. Earning at least one star throughout levels 1–6 opens the seventh level.
Driving techniques
Mini-Turbos provide a short boost from drifting. Drafting behind another kart can also produce a burst of speed. A Rocket Start can be prepared by holding acceleration as the countdown reaches 2.
