Tidus
Agile sword user. His early route favours speed and support such as Haste. Use him against quick ground enemies, then expand his role as his Sphere Grid path develops.
Yuna
Healing and summoning. Keeps the party healthy and calls aeons. Protect her recovery opportunities; summoning is a tactical option, not a substitute for keeping the rest of the party functional.
Wakka
Accurate ranged attacker. A natural answer to many flying enemies early on. His status attacks and Overdrive options provide more utility than ordinary physical damage alone.
Lulu
Elemental magic specialist. Matches spells to weaknesses and upgrades their strength through her path. Check enemy information before choosing an element that might be resisted or absorbed.
Auron
Armoured-target specialist. His early weapons commonly provide Piercing and his path offers strong physical tools. Distinguish Piercing from simply having a high Strength stat.
Rikku
Steal, Use and Mix. Adds item-based solutions and flexible Overdrive combinations. Build an ingredient supply through stealing instead of waiting until a boss to discover the inventory is empty.
Kimahri
Flexible development and Ronso Rage. His shorter starting path branches into others. Choose a direction deliberately and use Lancet on suitable enemies to learn additional Ronso Rage options.
Participation and switching
Developing the whole roster. Switching is useful, but a character generally needs to take an action to earn AP from the battle. Give reserves a meaningful turn rather than merely cycling them into view.
