FINAL FANTASY VII / WALKTHROUGH

Story route and sensible save checkpoints

Navigate the original Final Fantasy VII while keeping useful saves before major transitions.

Spoiler notice: This guide discusses story progression or late-game content.

Edition covered

Original Final Fantasy VII and ports of that game; not Remake or Rebirth.

01

Midgar and the world map

The opening is a largely directed sequence through Midgar. Check side rooms and equipment before leaving major locations, especially when a party member or route changes. After escaping, Kalm provides story context and the journey opens across the world map. This is the original game, not Remake’s chapter structure.

02

Junon to the western continent

The route moves through the Mythril Mine, Junon, the cargo ship and Costa del Sol before the Corel and Gold Saucer arc. Shops offer choices rather than mandatory upgrades: compare Materia slots and growth as well as attack and defence before spending a limited budget.

03

Cosmo Canyon, Nibelheim and Rocket Town

Follow the main route while checking for optional recruitment and exploration opportunities. Keep a separate save before entering a major dungeon or triggering a long story event. Returning later is possible in many areas, but it is not safe to assume every room or reward remains available forever.

04

Late first-disc transitions

The Temple of the Ancients and the northern pursuit lead into major story changes. If you care about optional conversations or character-specific equipment, preserve an earlier save. This route guide deliberately avoids detailing the plot twists, but the locations themselves still reveal the order of later events.

05

Airship freedom and the finale

Later travel gives you access to optional breeding, equipment and boss projects. Distinguish preparation for the final story encounter from preparation for superbosses. Finish the main game with a comfortable party if that is your goal; optional Weapon battles require a more specialised plan.

FIELD NOTE

Check the edition note above before following a route. Suggested preparation and tactics are editorial recommendations; alternative teams and routes can also work.
