01

Pair support Materia in linked slots

A blue support Materia needs a compatible partner in a connected slot. All paired with Restore can spread healing to the party, subject to All’s available uses. Two adjacent-looking slots that are not linked do not create the combination. Confirm the equipment’s slot diagram after every weapon change.

02

Distinguish weapon and armour links

Elemental Materia adds a compatible element to weapon attacks when linked in a weapon; in armour it provides elemental defence based on its level. Read the target enemy’s behaviour before choosing an element. Adding Fire damage is harmful against an opponent that absorbs Fire.

03

Learn Enemy Skills on the equipped copy

The character holding Enemy Skill Materia must be hit by a learnable ability and complete the battle successfully for the learning to persist. Different copies keep their own learned skills. Obtaining a second copy does not automatically copy the first one’s ability list.

04

Use Manipulate for cooperative targets

Some beneficial enemy abilities are easiest to learn by manipulating an enemy and directing the ability at your party. Not every enemy is susceptible, and not every move is learnable. Use the Enemy Skill reference to identify a suitable enemy before spending a long time waiting for the wrong attack.

05

Balance growth with immediate survival

AP growth differs between pieces of equipment. Double-growth gear can help develop Materia, but weaker defence or fewer slots may make it a poor choice for a difficult boss. Keep recovery available across the team and check stat penalties when equipping large amounts of magic or summon Materia.
