Crono
Sword attacks and Lightning magic. Strong direct offence and several useful combination Techs. Pair him with a healer when entering an unfamiliar boss rather than relying only on quick damage.
Marle
Healing, support and Ice magic. Useful recovery and Haste support. Her individual tools and combination Techs have different targeting, so inspect the menu before assuming one heal reaches the whole party.
Lucca
Fire magic and ranged attacks. Effective when enemies reward elemental or area attacks. Watch enemy placement before spending MP on a technique with a line or area effect.
Frog
Sword attacks, Water magic and healing. Balances physical contribution with recovery. His combination Techs can change the role he fills in a particular three-person team.
Robo
Physical attacks and healing technology. His techniques offer useful support without being learned through the same magic awakening as some companions. Check actual damage behaviour instead of assigning every mechanical attack a presumed element.
Ayla
Physical attacks and Charm. Her weapon progression differs from bought weapon upgrades. Charm adds an item-collection role; try it on worthwhile targets without letting stealing replace necessary healing.
Magus
Optional magic specialist. Recruitment depends on a late story choice. He has fewer ordinary combination options than the core cast, so build around his individual spells rather than expecting every trio to share a Triple Tech.
